about

MU Simulacra is an ongoing deep underground Experimental Soundscape meta - project by Canadian musician known only as "Grey". The project has the ambitious goal to produce 24-hours of quality musical soundscapes in a single conceptually coherent digital album, and is meant to illustrate and reconcile many disparate but ultimately related concepts, such as (un)intelligibility, (in)tangibility, (in)coherence and (dis)integration, (meaning)lessness, technology and nature, the transcendent and the hyperreal, natural and artificial language, clarity and obscurity, hope and melancholy, time and nostalgia.

All songs will be released for free under Art as an Expression of Rta, and after 10,000 hours of production time or 24 hours of tracks are completed, 10 of the best songs will be chosen for an upcoming debut album.

The self imposed parameters of this soundscape project are that the sonic scenery must always be highly emotive, acoustically diverse and non redundant, thematically consistent, expansive, immersive and thought provoking. It will be my attempt to do away with the notion that an album should be limited to 45 minutes, or a song to 3-4 minutes, and it is my challenge to other musicians to do the same without resorting to excessive reliance on drone, noise or meaningless repetition. With all this in mind, if the project becomes arduous or the songs produced begin to fail this criteria, I will not force it, and thus the album may perpetually remain in a Schrödingerian state of completeness / incompleteness. By the same token I am highly determined to complete it, whether it takes a lifetime with lengthy creative hiatuses intervening, or perhaps years between songs - for accomplishing this goal is the only way to extract maximum creativity, experimentation and perhaps evolution of what can be deemed as aesthetically valuable.

despite the aforementioned, the primary purpose of the project is art for art's sake, as it must always be. Thus we cannot ignore the subject of postmodernity, as this cannot be avoided in an experimental art project. Made obvious with the project parameters, I am taking a stance that disregards the notion that aesthetic value comes from how it is framed, and whom is framing and presenting it. I believe in a transcendental beauty and ultimate Truth, even if I am merely chasing it. That being said, I have the utmost respect for those pushing the artistic boundaries, and taking shots that very well may miss or possibly even ridiculed. To achieve my goal of 24 hours, I will no doubt have to delve increasingly more into the territory of risk. Art demands this.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

'Art as an Expression of Rta' began after Grey's numerous travels throughout the world. What were meant to be treks, explorations and mindless decompressions led to an impromptu near-decade pilgrimage after inadvertently staring at a candle for an extended period of time on a beach in Zanzibar (Nungwi) and then at Venus (at the time an evening star). A potent Electromagnetic download ensued, revealing a transcendental reality previously concealed. Despite his attempts to have "normal' vacations over the course of the following 8 years, he was twice more bridged by a lightwave in Trinidad (Crown Point, Tobago) and then in Greece (Chapel of St. George, Mount Lycabettus) - each time providing increasing clarity. After devouring the work of all major and minor philosophers and theologians in order to make sense and integrate his revelations, Grey landed upon music production as a means to express the channels that had been opened to him.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

An artist cannot exist without inspiration, so I would be remiss if did not give credit to those who inspired me;
Deadmau5, M83, Boards of Canada, Sigur Ros, Banco De Gaia, Pink Floyd, David Byrne, John Cage, Bull of Heaven, NǽnøcÿbbŒrg VbërrHolökäävsT, Ryoji Ikeda, Jean-Michel Jarre, Brian Eno, Gas, Brock Van Wey, Hegel, Camus, Wes Anderson, PT Anderson, Alex Garland, Charlie Kaufman, Kurt Vonnegut, Pynchon, Joyce, Murakami, Umberto Eco, Francis Younghusband, Walter Russell, Emanuel Swedenborg, William Blake, Emerson, Thoreau, Ted Kaczynski (the philosophy, not the murder), Ruskin, Turner, Seurat, Kandinsky, Blavatsky, J. Krishnamurti, Saussure, Baudrillard, Chomsky, Gödel, Boole, Whitehead, Saul Kripke, Leibniz, Goethe, Hofstadter, Plato, Plotinus, Aquinas, Al Ghazali and Lao Tzu. My main influences I would like to keep implicit on the album.

Inspired by Monet's various series in which he paints the same subject over and over again in different Light to capture various atmospheres and moods, I have created many songs with the exact same (or varying slightly) profoundly simple chord progression, which I then build a track around to explore radically different soundscapes from each other. I am most inspired by the experimental aspects of art, and thus many tracks will revolve around a very few simple repetitive notes. The final product however, should be radically different from one another and go in many directions. (this experimentation is mostly abandoned in part II which focuses more on unique and varying chords)

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

ps. the first part of this album (tracks 1 - 31) was arranged in accordance to acoustic flow (tone, tempo, rhythm etc.) as well as an overarching dialectic with a thesis, antithesis and synthesis. Part II (the remainder) will follow a real life, personal dialectic and thus will be arranged in the order I created them. This way the audience as well a myself can see how the style changes and evolves as artistic creation becomes more difficult over time.
